Engaging children in science

Ella Rhodes on an opportunity for psychologists to engage with school children.

20 August 2019

A competition which sees academics chatting to school children online about science and voted out one by one is returning this November with three zones sponsored by the British Psychological Society (BPS). I’m a Scientist, Get me out of here brings scientists into themed chat rooms, or zones, which schools can apply to join to give students a chance to find out more about myriad areas of science.

This November’s event, which runs from the 11th to the 22nd, includes nine themed zones and three general science zones including nuclear, microbe, and big data zones. The BPS has sponsored a society zone for social psychologists to share their knowledge and a health behaviour zone. A special enquiry zone for primary school children has also been sponsored by the BPS. This will bring together six psychologists who will put forward a citizen science project idea which the children can vote on and later help to run.

If you would like to apply to take part see imascientist.org.uk/scientists. The deadline for applications is Monday 23 September.
