Invitation for early career researchers

Make the most of 'big data' at a London event later this month.

05 October 2016

Recent technological advances have led to a vast number of research tools that enable the collection of 'big' high-quality data, which are the marrow of all science. However, many early career researchers struggle to apply these tools in their own studies, because they miss the necessary expertise and resources. To alleviate this problem, the Hungry Mind Lab directed by Dr Sophie von Stumm, are inviting behavioural science early career researchers, including PhD students, post-docs, research assistants and junior faculty, to attend the Better Data event. Over 20 assessment technologies will be showcased in the morning for researchers to get hands-on experience, for example with portable DNA analysis kits, virtual reality equipment, eyetracking innovations, and digital language recorders. In the afternoon, media experts – for example The Guardian's science correspondent Dr Hannah Devlin and BBC broadcaster Dr Adam Rutherford – will explain how to engage the public with your research, while scientist- including Professors Robert Plomin and Sophie Scott will discuss how to collect behavioural data from extremely large samples.

The event, funded by the British Academy, takes place from 10am on 26 October 2016 at SOAS in Central London. Tickets are £10, including lunch and drinks. All ticket earnings will go into a £2,000 funding competition to support an early career researcher in developing a new assessment technology for their own research.
