Interview with Tommy MacKay

John Sheppard interviews Tommy MacKay, the Society’s new President, on his life, the year ahead and the joys of (slight) eccentricity.

18 May 2000

THE Society had to change, but now it needs a period of stability,’ says the incoming President, Tommy MacKay. ‘It could not expect to stay as it was, with all the world evolving around it. The changes of the last two years were necessary, albeit that we did not always handle the change process well, but now we must have a period of consolidation.’ Active at committee level over 10 years in the Scottish Branch — four years as its Chair — and as a member of the Scottish Division of Educational Psychology, Tommy has until now perhaps not been widely identified with the Society ‘establishment’ outside his own country.
