Featured job: Psychological Services Team Manager

Naomi Humber, Clinical Lead at Bupa Health Services, explained, ‘We have a really expanding, developing role for the health services at Bupa and this has caused us to create this new role.’

I asked Naomi about the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP). ‘It’s a 24/7 telephone-based service offered to employees of companies who have a contract with Bupa, as well as customers of Bupa who have private medical insurance. They can access services ranging from mental health triage, legal and financial support, computerised cognitive behavioural therapy and counselling to critical incident debriefing, and referral to access mental health treatment via Bupa or the NHS. There are 30 members in the team but we’re currently recruiting as the service expands.’

Psychology is critical to the EAP service. ‘A Consultant Clinical Psychologist is its clinical lead, and psychology is an important discipline across the service and within the areas of assessment, formulation and intervention. It’s multidisciplinary – the successful candidate will work with a consultant psychiatrist, counsellors, CBT therapists and staff mental health nurses. The team has a keen interest in psychological theory and the models which they use daily.

I should say they’re also very proud of their team work.‘The role will be based in Salford Quays and we have a fantastic new building on its way which will be ready in May 2018. The successful candidate will work as the clinical manager alongside operational managers within the service and report to the Consultant Clinical Psychologist. He or she will oversee clinical governance of the service, providing appropriate clinical support to staff, regular training and auditing: leading staff and working to inform their decision-making and best practice. Callers cover a wide demographic and come from the UK and the Republic of Ireland. There’s a strong business element in the role too – meeting key customers; working with sales/tendering teams. So, the person will need good communication and interpersonal skills... and enjoy these sorts of business meetings.’

How would you describe the person you’re looking for? ‘Enthusiastic about mental health and wellbeing. He or she must be confident in his or her own knowledge and approach. And every day is busy, so you must be organised!’
