New BPS Learn courses launched

This spring the BPS is set to launch CPD courses in sleep and insomnia, trauma and working as an expert witness. Hosted on BPS Learn – the society’s online learning platform – the courses have been developed by the BPS Professional Development team in collaboration with psychologists.

The course on insomnia and sleep was created alongside Sleep Unlimited – a team of psychologists who offer sleep training, led by clinical psychologist Dr David Lee. It was developed following a webinar which attracted almost 200 attendees and includes films and Q&A sessions held via a forum on BPS Learn.

It is aimed at anyone working in the psychological workforce, and other healthcare professionals, who might be interested in the impact of sleep problems on the clients they work with. The six-module course is underpinned by a psychological and physiological evidence base for sleep and sleep-related problems.

The BPS has also developed course on trauma which is made up of an online module and facilitated workshop, most appropriate for those working in tier one trauma-informed roles. The course aims to develop the competencies, skills and attitudes which are outlined in the BPS recommendations for the education and training of psychologists working with psychological trauma – it will outline what trauma is, how to support those with trauma, and communication and engagement.

A series of eight training modules on working as an expert witness are also being released this spring. These will focus on the knowledge needed to fulfil the role and shall explore the importance of expert witnesses, how to get the best out of training and will consider some of the challenges which expert witnesses may face. This series is intended for HCPC-registered practitioner psychologists or those coming to the end of accredited training and is particularly suitable for those considering embarking on practice as an expert witness.
